Turandot: The Most Dangerous Love in the World

Welcome, everyone!

Tonight, we are going to perform Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot.

Like many other famous operas, Turandot is in Italian because opera started in Italy in the 16th century.

Before we begin, I’d like to tell you the storyline of the opera Turandot.

You will appreciate it better if you know the story.

Turandot, a Chinese princess, is a woman of great beauty, but she is as cold as ice.

Any prince who wants to marry her must answer three riddles.

If he fails, he must die.

No one has ever been able to answer them.

One day, a brave prince falls in love with her at first sight.

He becomes the first man to answer all three riddles.

However, Turandot does not want to marry the prince.

He is nothing more than a stranger to her.

He then gives her a riddle of his own.

He asks her, “What is my name?”

He adds, “If you answer correctly, I will agree to die.

If you answer incorrectly, you will have to marry me.”

Turandot must find the answer before dawn, but his riddle is as difficult as hers.

She says to everyone, “No one will go to sleep until someone finds out his name.”

The prince then sings the most famous aria of the whole opera, “Nessun Dorma.”

It means no one sleeps.

No one sleeps.

No one sleeps, not even you, Princess. . . .

My secret is safe.

No one will know my name. . . .

At dawn, I will win! I will win!

The prince’s name is Calaf.

Will the princess learn his name in time?

Let’s watch the opera and find out.
