Go, Team!

 

The game was over. 

 

The junior team won it, and all the players were happy.

 

While they were in the locker room, the coach handed every boy a card. 

 

It had a list of the players on the junior team.

 

“As you all know, we have an opening for a player on the senior team,” said the coach. 

 

“Why don’t you pick a player for the team? Check one name on the list.”

 

Scottie looked at the list and saw his name. 

 

Then he sighed and put a check next to Michael’s name. 

 

He couldn’t deny that Michael was good enough for the senior team.

 

The coach collected every card from the boys. 

 

Everyone’s hopes were high.

 

They all wanted to be on the senior team.

 

The coach looked up and said, “Well, it’s a tie between Michael and Scottie.”

 

Scottie’s heart leaped. 

 

He was surprised that he was tied with Michael.

 

“Well,” said the coach, “both are wonderful enough for the senior team, and it’s hard to pick just one player. But I have to, so I’ll pick Scottie.”

 

Then the coach walked over to Scottie and said, “Congratulations!”

 

“Thank you, but Michael is such a good shot. He makes the most baskets,” said Scottie.

 

“Of course, he does,” said the coach. 

 

“But he shoots whether there’s a player in a better position or not. It’s important to play for the team! Don’t worry. I know a good player when I see one.”

 

Scottie walked out of the room. 

 

He felt like giving a loud and happy shout. 

 

Then he saw Michael.

 

Suddenly Scottie felt sorry for him. 

 

“I guess you don’t care, but I picked you for the senior team,” said Scottie.

 

Michael smiled. 

 

“You know what? I picked YOU.”

 

Scottie was surprised. 

 

“You did?”

 

“Yeah. You always do your best, and you’re a team player. Today you played for the team, and we won the game. Congratulations!”
