Old Things, New Art
Art can be made out of all kinds of old things around us.
Famous sculptures and pictures are often made from everyday things such as cans, bottles, and bits of paper.
Bicycle Junk and Bull’s Head
How do you like this artwork?
It was created by Pablo Picasso.
He used a bicycle seat and handlebars to make this sculpture!
During World War II, there were not a lot of useful things for art.
But Picasso couldn’t stop creating artwork, so he picked up junk such as old bicycles and mattress springs.
He used not only old things but also his imagination to create this sculpture in 1942.
Thrown-away Things and New Art
This artwork was created by Kurt Schwitters.
He used thrown-away objects to make artwork.
He often said, “Old things are good for art.”
Schwitters walked the streets and collected not only pieces of paper but also bits of wood.
He glued and nailed them to a board, and created a new style of art, Rubbish.
In 1937, he moved to Norway.
He was able to take his famous work out of Germany because it looked like rubbish.
