Maybe a fruit, but, in New Zealand the word kiwi has a couple of meanings. 

 

First, kiwi is the name of a delicious, green fruit. 

 

A lot of kiwi fruit is grown there, so New Zealand is known as the land of kiwi fruit. 

 

Kiwi is also the name of one of New Zealand’s native birds. 

 

The kiwi is special to New Zealanders because it is the symbol of the nation. 

 

Also, kiwi is a nickname for people from New Zealand. 

 

Today, New Zealanders are sometimes called Kiwis throughout the world. 

 

Now, you know that kiwi is the name of a fruit, a bird, and also a people.

Now, let’s talk about the Maori. 

 

They are the native people of New Zealand. 

 

They went to live on the islands long before Europeans arrived. 

 

The Maori culture is an important part of today’s New Zealand society. 

 

The Maori language is taught at some schools and there are Maori language radio and TV stations. 

 

There are Maori villages in many parts of the country. 

 

You can visit Maori villages and experience Maori culture.

The haka may look scary because haka dancers shout and move their bodies wildly.

For example, New Zealand’s national rugby team members do the haka before every match. 

 

It is famous all over the world. 

 

If you see the haka, you will probably agree that the rival team must be scared. 

 

Like the kiwi bird, the haka is a national symbol.
