A Hole in the Fence

 

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. 

 

The boy used to get angry very easily and hurt others with his words. 

 

His friends and neighbors avoided him, and his parents became really worried about him.

 

His mother and father advised him to control his anger. 

 

Unfortunately, all their efforts failed. 

 

Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea.

 

One day, he gave his son a bag of nails. 

 

He asked him to hammer a nail into the fence whenever he became angry. 

 

“Why should I do that?” asked the boy.

 

“It will be fun. Why don’t you give it a try, son?” said the father.

 

“OK,” said the boy.

 

Whenever he lost his temper, the boy ran to the fence and hammered a nail.

 

He hammered over 30 nails on the first day! 

 

After a few days, the boy found out that hammering nails into the fence was harder than holding his temper.

 

One day, the boy said to his father, “Now I can control my anger. 

 

I won’t hammer any more nails into the fence from now on!”

 

“Good for you, son. 

 

Now pull out a nail when you control your anger,” said his father.

 

“OK. That’ll be a piece of cake,” said the boy.

 

Several days passed and most of the nails were gone. 

 

However, there were a few nails that the boy could not pull out.

 

He told his father about it.

 

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. 

 

He pointed a finger at a hole and asked his son, “What do you see there?” 

 

The boy answered, “A hole in the fence.”

 

The father said, “The nails were your bad temper. 

 

You can pull them out, but the holes are still in the fence. 

 

And some nails cannot even be pulled out.

 

You can hurt someone and say sorry later. 

 

But it’s too late. 

 

The wound is still in the person’s heart, just like the hole. 

 

Sometimes words are more painful than punches or kicks.”
